Minnesota Mom Who Called 5-Year-Old Autistic Boy the N-Word in Viral Video Now Facing Trial
A Minnesota mother caught on video hurling a racist slur at a 5-year-old Black autistic boy is now headed to trial, months after the disturbing footage sparked national outrage — and after she raised hundreds of thousands of dollars by portraying herself as the victim.
Shiloh Hendrix, 36, has been charged with three counts of disorderly conduct over the April 28 incident at a playground in Rochester, prosecutors said Thursday. Her trial is scheduled to begin Aug. 31 next year, with a pre-trial hearing set for Aug. 21, according to ABC 6 News.
Hendrix, who has prior convictions including DUI, disorderly conduct, and brawling, has pleaded not guilty.
The confrontation went viral in early May when 30-year-old Sharmake Omar filmed Hendrix after she allegedly called a 5-year-old boy the N-word. In the video, she repeats the slur multiple times and makes disparaging comments about the child being a “drain” on the welfare system.
The 49-second clip shows Hendrix carrying her son and walking away as Omar confronts her. When asked why she used the slur, she replies, “Mind your f–king own business,” and accuses the child of taking items from her son’s diaper bag.
Online viewers were quick to condemn her behavior.
Soon after the video spread, Hendrix publicly identified herself as the woman in the footage. She launched a fundraiser on GiveSendGo, claiming she needed money to “protect” her family after her personal information was leaked online.
Her campaign quickly exploded, pulling in more than $700,000 by May 6 — including donations from neo-Nazis, white nationalists, and supporters who insisted her comments were protected by the First Amendment.
Amid the controversy, GiveSendGo disabled comments on the fundraising page.
