AIIMS Bhopal has rolled out a cutting‑edge prostate treatment called Prostate Artery Embolization (PAE), a minimally invasive technique that shrinks an enlarged prostate without surgery. The new approach targets the blood vessels feeding the prostate, cutting off its supply and causing the gland to shrink. Healthcare providers say PAE offers quicker recovery, fewer complications, and helps patients keep their sexual function intact.
Dr. Rajesh Malik, head of Radiodiagnosis at AIIMS Bhopal, explained that PAE follows guidelines from the American Urological Association and the UK’s NICE. “We perform it through a tiny puncture in the wrist or groin rather than cutting an incision,” he said. Advanced imaging guides tiny particles into the prostate arteries, blocking blood flow and reducing prostate size.
A 65‑year‑old man with severe urinary symptoms, who was considered too high‑risk for conventional surgery, received the procedure at the hospital’s Interventional Radiology Centre. Dr. Aman Kumar carried out the treatment without complications, and the patient reports being symptom‑free weeks later. “He’s enjoying a better quality of life,” Dr. Malik noted, highlighting how PAE can benefit those who cannot undergo surgery.
PAE’s advantages include no hospital stay, fast return to normal activities, and a lower risk of erectile or ejaculatory problems compared to traditional prostate surgeries. AIIMS Bhopal’s introduction of this technology marks another step toward using advanced medical methods to improve patient outcomes and reduce the need for invasive surgery.
