New Delhi, Oct 19 – Osteoporosis, a silent killer that weakens bones and raises fracture risk, is rising as a public‑health problem. The Ministry of Ayush said on World Osteoporosis Day that Ayurveda offers practical steps to prevent and treat the disease.
The ministry urged people—especially the elderly and post‑menopausal women—to start early, focus on a balanced diet, and adopt healthy habits. It called for routine check‑ups, mind‑body exercises like yoga, and simple lifestyle changes that can keep bones strong and reduce breakage.
“Treating osteoporosis early can cut the chances of hip, wrist, and spine fractures,” a ministry spokesperson told reporters. “Simple lifestyle changes protect bone health.”
Ayurveda links weakened bones to an imbalance of the “Vata dosha.” That idea aligns with modern science, which sees osteoporosis as a result of bone demineralisation and hormonal shifts that come with age.
Prof. Rabinarayan Acharya, Director General of the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), praised Ayurveda’s holistic approach. “The classical concept of ‘Asthi Saushirya’ matches what today’s science calls bone fragility,” he said. “Diet, lifestyle, and herbal therapy are essential for bone health.”
CCRAS researchers are testing Ayurvedic formulas like ‘Laksha Guggulu’ and ‘Pravala Pishti’ for their effects on bone density. Their studies aim to build scientific evidence supporting Ayurveda’s role in treating musculoskeletal disorders.
The ministry also reminded citizens to include yoga and moderate exercise in everyday routines. “These gentle activities improve flexibility and strengthen bones,” a ministry official said.
On World Osteoporosis Day, the Ministry of Ayush encouraged people to adopt Ayurvedic prevention practices, balanced nutrition, and gentle physical activity. By weaving these habits into daily life, the ministry believes, people can protect their bones, prevent fragility, and stay active as they age.
