Bangladesh: 12 people die of dengue, raises death toll in 2025 to 179

Bangladesh is facing a tough battle against dengue this year, with 12 more deaths reported on Sunday alone. That pushes the total fatalities since January 2025 to 179, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Health officials say 740 new patients showed up at hospitals that day, bringing the confirmed dengue cases for 2025 to a staggering 48,831. Right now, about 2,021 people are getting treatment across hospitals nationwide.

The latest deaths hit hard in several areas: five in the Barishal division, three in Dhaka North City, two in Dhaka South City Corporation, and one each in Chattogram and Mymensingh divisions. New infections popped up everywhere too—165 cases in Barishal, 147 outside Dhaka city, 122 in Dhaka North, 115 in Dhaka South, 77 in Chattogram, 52 in Khulna, 28 in Rajshahi, 22 in Mymensingh, nine in Sylhet, and three in Rangpur.

Public health experts are sounding the alarm, saying this dengue crisis is worsening faster than last year, when 575 people lost their lives. They’re calling for urgent steps like stronger mosquito control efforts and better hospital readiness as cases keep climbing.

In response, the DGHS rolled out new guidelines on September 16 to help public hospitals handle the surge. Every hospital now needs to set up special dengue wards and form expert medical teams. DGHS Director for Hospitals and Clinics, Abu Hossain Md Mainul Ahsan, issued the order last Tuesday, stressing the need for top-notch care to cut risks and boost service quality.

Hospitals must stock up on essentials like NS-1 tests, emergency support, and plenty of medicines. Dengue patients go straight to dedicated rooms or wards, with ICU access prioritized if things get serious. Doctors and nurses have clear roles in this, and hospitals are creating boards with specialists in medicine, pediatrics, and more to treat both dengue and chikungunya cases.

These teams will oversee trained doctors, medical officers, and residents who handle patient care. Even suspected cases in outpatient departments get the same expert attention. On top of that, hospital leaders have to write to local city corporations or municipalities to launch mosquito-killing and cleanup drives right around their facilities.

To keep things coordinated, every hospital must hold a dengue meeting every Saturday, led by the director, superintendent, and civil surgeon. These moves aim to tackle the dengue outbreak in Bangladesh head-on and protect more lives amid the rising threat.
