Dhaka, Oct. 19 – Bangladesh faced another dengue death this morning, raising the yearly death toll to 245 for 2025. The fatality, reported by local media, came from the Barishal Division, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

In the past 24 hours, 950 more people were admitted with viral fever, bringing the total number of dengue cases in 2025 to 59,849. Health officials say 977 patients are currently being treated in Dhaka hospitals, while 2,793 patients receive care across the country. The gender split shows 61.3 % male and 38.7 % female patients.

For comparison, Bangladesh recorded 575 dengue deaths in 2024, with 101,214 confirmed cases and 100,040 recoveries that year, the DGHS noted. Despite the increase in infections, the death rate has dropped compared with last year.

DGHS Director‑General Abu Jafor addressed reporters at a press briefing during the Typhoid Vaccination Campaign‑2025. He said, “We see more dengue cases than last year, but fewer deaths relative to infections.” He urged residents to focus on mosquito‑breeding control and personal protection, such as using nets and staying away from standing water.

Jafor highlighted that over half of dengue deaths in hospitals occur on the first day of admission, indicating patients delay seeking care. He stressed that early diagnosis can allow treatment at home with proper medical support, and blamed lack of awareness and delayed medical attention for rising fatalities.

Dengue is a viral disease spread by infected mosquitoes. It is widespread in tropical and subtropical areas, especially in urban and semi‑urban settings. While there is no specific cure, early detection and timely medical care significantly reduce severe cases and death.

Health authorities continue to push mosquito control measures and public education to curb the springtime dengue outbreak across Bangladesh.
