Cancer care for women deeply sensitive issue: CM Rekha Gupta

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted the sensitive nature of cancer care for women during the launch of Apollo Athenaa, Asia’s first dedicated cancer centre for women, in New Delhi on Tuesday. She stressed the urgent need for more healthcare facilities across India to support women’s health.

Gupta praised the new centre, saying it will bring real empowerment to women by ensuring privacy, dignity, and personalized treatments. The hospital offers advanced options like robotic-assisted surgeries, microscopic procedures, and laparoscopic methods. It also provides comprehensive care, including nutrition support, menopausal health services, onco-psychology, physiotherapy, and palliative care.

“Cancer care for women is a deeply sensitive issue, and it’s heartening to see us taking steps toward true empowerment,” Gupta said at the event. She called Apollo Athenaa a major milestone in cancer care, adding that it will help women not just in Delhi, but across India and the world.

Gupta urged stronger public-private partnerships to build more healthcare facilities. This, she said, would boost India’s healthcare system and ensure no one misses out on proper medical services.

Recent data shows a rising trend in cancer cases among women. According to the ICMR’s National Cancer Registry Programme (NCRP), breast cancer and cervical cancer top the list of common cancers in Indian women. GLOBOCAN 2022 estimates reveal that nearly 54% of cancer cases in Indian women stem from these female-specific cancers, with more women now diagnosed than men in recent years.

Dr. Prathap C Reddy, Founder Chairman of Apollo Hospitals Group, shared his excitement: “Apollo Athenaa marks a new era in women’s healthcare, blending cutting-edge science with compassion. It ensures every woman gets timely, dignified care and shows India’s potential to lead in medical innovation and humane healthcare.”

MP Bansuri Swaraj from New Delhi also spoke about the government’s strong push through policies and initiatives for cancer prevention, early detection, treatment, and better patient care nationwide.
