Centre launches 10 new AMRIT pharmacies

New Delhi – The Union government kicked off 10 fresh AMRIT pharmacies on Saturday, extending easy access to low‑cost medicines across India.

Health Minister JP Nadda unveiled the new outlets at a ceremony in the capital, celebrating a decade of the AMRIT program. “Since 2015 we’ve built a network of more than 255 pharmacies in 24 states and four union territories,” Nadda said, praising the effort to make quality drugs affordable.

The new centres will open at key medical hubs: PGI Neuroscience Centre in Chandigarh, GMCH‑Unit II and State Cancer Institute in Jammu, AIIMS Deogarh, Dental Hospital Srinagar, SCTIMST in Trivandrum, Mumbai Port Trust, IIT Jodhpur, AIIMS Gorakhpur, and AIIMS Kalyani Unit 3. These sites will stock essential medicines and specialised drugs for oncology, cardiology, orthopaedics and endocrinology.

AMRIT pharmacies offer products at up to 50 % below the maximum retail price (MRP), saving patients money without sacrificing quality. More than 6,500 drugs and medical devices are available, serving 6.85 million patients nationwide. So far, the network has dispensed over 17,000 crore worth of medicines, freeing patients of more than Rs 8,500 crore in cumulative savings.

All AIIMS campuses and other national‑importance institutes already host AMRIT outlets. Nadda urged the public‑sector firm HLL Lifecare to double the number of pharmacies to at least 500, and called for rapid expansion in all private and government medical colleges and district hospitals.

During the event, the minister also launched a new Ecogreen 2.0 digital platform and announced a custom “My Stamp” service with India Post.
