Kerala CM Vijayan announces first phase alignment of Thiruvananthapuram Metro ahead of civic body polls

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala – On Friday, Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan used his X (formerly Twitter) account to announce the first phase of the Thiruvananthapuram Metro Rail. He called the approval a “landmark step” that will reshape the capital’s future.

He said the new metro will change how people move around the city and speed up its growth. The 31‑kilometre line will run through the city and have 27 stations, linking major IT parks, transport hubs, government offices, and hospitals. The route starts at Pappanamcode, passes through Killippalam, Palayam, Sreekariyam, Kazhakoottam, Technopark, Kochuveli, the airport, and ends at Inchakkal.

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) will handle the project. KMRL has already begun basic works in Thiruvananthapuram, including flyovers at Sreekariyam, Ulloor, and Pattom. The metro is expected to cut traffic, boost connectivity, and promote greener travel.

Key interchange stations will be at Kazhakoottam, Technopark and Kariavattom, improving links between residential and business areas. Once finished, the line will connect Technopark’s three phases, the international airport, Thampanoor Bus Stand, the railway station, the Secretariat and the Medical College.

The announcement comes just weeks before local body elections, when the ruling Left Democratic Front faces a tight three‑way contest in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. It also recalls a similar metro proposal from more than a decade ago, which did not take off at the time.
