Dhaka, Oct 23 – Bangladesh’s dengue death toll climbed to 259 in 2025 after four people died in the first 24 hours of the day, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The total number of dengue cases now stands at 63,170, with 803 new admissions reported in just this 24‑hour period.
The DGHS said two deaths were registered in Dhaka City, while one each occurred in the Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions. Hospitals are treating 2,648 patients at the moment, and 41,638 cases have already been discharged.
“We’re seeing more dengue infections than last year, but the fatality rate has dropped,” said DGHS Director‑General Abu Jafor during a press briefing on the 2025 Typhoid Vaccination Campaign at the Health Ministry. He urged citizens to focus on mosquito control and to use nets and other protective gear. “If we ignore these measures, eliminating dengue will be very hard.”
Jafor highlighted that over 50 % of dengue deaths in hospitals occur on the first day after admission. “Early detection can allow treatment at home if the disease is caught early,” he added. He blamed a lack of awareness, negligence, and late medical seeking for the rising death rate.
Dengue is spread by Aedes mosquitoes and is common in tropical and subtropical regions, especially in urban and semi‑urban areas. There is no specific cure, but early identification and prompt medical care lower the chance of severe disease. The World Health Organization stresses that vector control remains the key to preventing outbreaks.
