Fiji announced its first National Child Safeguarding Policy today, a bold step that promises to protect every child across the country.
Minister for Women and Children Sashi Kiran called the policy “a landmark moment” and said it marks Fiji’s full commitment to stop violence, abuse and exploitation of children.
“Children represent about 63 % of all sexual offences reported to police each year,” Kiran warned. In 2022 alone, the figure jumped to 70 % – including 34 infant victims. The Fiji Bureau of Statistics estimates that child‑related violence costs the nation roughly 460 million Fijian dollars a year (about 202 million U.S. dollars). That figure hides the emotional, psychological, and lifelong trauma victims endure.
What the new policy does:
- Safe, child‑friendly services – All programs that serve children must be delivered in a respectful, inclusive environment.
- Clear rules for protection – A mandatory Child Protection Code of Conduct applies to every ministry, agency and organisation that works with kids.
- Rigorous vetting – Staff appointed around children must undergo background checks and other safeguards.
- Risk‑mitigation plans – Tailored strategies help institutions spot and prevent potential harm.
- Accountability at every level – Human‑resource guidelines help embed a safety culture in ministries and agencies.
The launch comes as the Pacific Islands face growing concern about child protection. Cultural taboos, limited resources, and widespread under‑reporting often keep abuse hidden. UNICEF reports that Pacific nations experience some of the highest rates of violence against children worldwide, with many incidents happening at home or within communities.
By putting a clear, enforceable framework in place, Fiji hopes to change the country’s child‑safety culture forever.
