Rep. Troy Nehls, a Trump ally, will not seek re-election as twin brother announces campaign to replace him

Congressman Troy Nehls Announces He Will Not Run Again, Focus on Family
On Saturday, Representative Troy Nehls of Texas, R‑TX, made headlines by announcing that he will not seek reelection in 2026. He said his decision was driven by a desire to spend more time with his family. After the announcement, his identical twin brother, Trever Nehls, declared that he would run to fill the vacant seat.
Nehls explained that the choice came after a Thanksgiving conversation with his wife and daughters, emphasizing that the holiday was the right time to make the decision. He has been serving in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2021.
In a tweet, Nehls reflected on his career, stating: “After more than 30 years in law enforcement serving and protecting my community as a police officer, constable, Fort Bend County Sheriff, an Army veteran, and six years representing this district in Congress, I have made the decision, after conversations with my beautiful bride and my girls over the Thanksgiving holiday, to focus on my family and return home after this Congress.”
Nehls, who aligns with former President Donald Trump, noted that he informed the president of his plan before announcing it publicly. He added, “Before making this decision, I called President Trump personally to let him know of my plans,” citing Trump’s support for their district and describing him as a friend.
The congressman expressed gratitude for the chance to serve, saying, “Serving this country in the military, serving our community in law enforcement, and serving this district in Congress has been the honor of my life. Thank you for your trust, your friendship, and your prayers.”
At 57, Nehls has been a strong backer of Trump’s immigration policy, including the mass deportation agenda. The House Judiciary Committee moved forward with legislation this month aimed at easing deportation processes, with a similar bill introduced in the Senate by Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R‑TN.
Nehls also co‑sponsored a proposal to place Trump’s likeness on the $100 bill and called for renaming Dulles International Airport after the former president. He urged the Republican Party to support Trump’s initiatives wholeheartedly.
A veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves, Nehls served combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, in addition to a long tenure in law enforcement.
Following Nehls’s retirement announcement, his twin brother Trever publicly announced his candidacy for the seat. In a Facebook post, Trever wrote, “I am honored to announce my candidacy for Congressional District 22 to continue fighting for the people of this district. District 22 needs a Representative who will follow in Troy’s footsteps and stand shoulder-to-shoulder with President Trump to defend our conservative values, secure the border, protect our families, and oppose the reckless and radical agenda that Democrats continue to press upon the American people. I’m ready to take up that fight.”
The decision adds Troy Nehls to a growing roster of Republican lawmakers stepping down, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R‑GA, who declared earlier this month her intention to retire amid her ongoing tensions with Trump.
