Gujarat has made impressive strides in maternal health, with its maternal mortality ratio (MMR) dropping to 51 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2023. This encouraging update comes from the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) data, shared by the state government.
The progress shows a clear downward trend. Back in 2016, the MMR stood at 91, and it fell to 57 in 2020 and 53 in 2021. Gujarat now ranks fifth among major states with the lowest MMR, well below the national average of 88 per 100,000 live births from the SRS 2021–23 report.
State officials credit this success to dedicated efforts by the Health and Family Welfare Department, led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Health Minister Rushikesh Patel. They focus on key steps like early antenatal registration, at least four pregnancy check-ups, special care for high-risk mothers, institutional deliveries, post-natal exams, and thorough reviews of maternal deaths.
Several schemes have played a big role. Under the Khilkhilat Yojana in 2024–25, more than 19.2 lakh mothers and 12.5 lakh newborns received benefits. High-risk expectant mothers who meet 19 specific criteria now get Rs 15,000 in financial aid. Those qualifying under 11 criteria in the Namostree scheme receive Rs 12,000.
The Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA), started in June 2016, offers specialized antenatal check-ups on the 9th and 24th of every month. It runs through public health facilities and involves 502 private gynecologists volunteering for the cause.
Gujarat’s government keeps pushing programs to boost prenatal and postnatal care, ensure safe institutional deliveries, and handle emergency obstetric services. Initiatives like Janani Suraksha Yojana, mobile health units, and stronger primary healthcare setups have made pregnancies safer.
Experts stress that nutrition, awareness, and quick medical help remain essential for even better results. The state has ramped up its health budget, showing real commitment to public healthcare. For 2024–25, funds go toward upgrading district and community health centers, immunization drives, essential medicines, and health awareness campaigns. This also includes expanding maternal and child health programs, preventive care, and digital health tools.
These steps highlight Gujarat’s ongoing drive to protect mothers and newborns, setting an example for maternal health improvements across India.
