India has announced a boost to its help for Afghanistan, focusing on health, roads, schools and rebuilding homes after recent disasters.

In a meeting in New Delhi, India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, met Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi to discuss ways to support Afghanistan’s recovery after years of conflict. The two leaders reviewed a range of joint projects and pledged deeper cooperation.

Health‑care projects on the rise
India will fund and build several key facilities in Afghanistan. A new Thalassemia Centre and a Modern Diagnostic Centre are already in the works. In Kabul, India will install a new heating system at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Child Health, build a 30‑bed hospital in Bagrami, and set up an Oncology and a Trauma Centre. Across Paktika, Khost and Paktia provinces, five maternity clinics will open. Up to 75 prosthetic limbs have already been fitted for Afghan patients, a program praised by Kabul’s leaders and international partners. India also plans to continue providing high‑quality medical treatment to Afghan citizens.

Speedy earthquake relief
The two countries agreed to help rebuild homes in areas hit by the recent quake in Nangarhar and Kunar provinces. India has already sent relief supplies and will send 20 ambulances, a donation that was formally handed over by Jaishankar. Afghan officials thanked India for being the first to respond and for delivering much‑needed aid.

Tools for growth
Capacity‑building stays a priority. India keeps offering scholarships to Afghan students through the e‑ICCR program and is looking into additional options for study abroad. Trade ties are set to deepen with the launch of the India‑Afghanistan Air Freight Corridor, which will streamline shipping and boost commerce. Afghanistan has also invited Indian companies to invest in its mining sector.

Water and energy cooperation
Both sides will cooperate on hydroelectric projects to help meet Afghanistan’s energy supply. India assisted in building and maintaining the Salma Dam in Herat, and the parties agreed to work together on sustainable water management for agriculture.

Security and solidarity
The meeting underscored a shared stance against terrorism. Afghanistan condemned the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, and the governments reaffirmed their commitment to regional stability and to preventing any group from using Afghan territory to target India.

Culture and sport
Finally, the leaders discussed expanding cultural exchange, especially in cricket, to strengthen people‑to‑people ties.

India’s expanded partnership aims to bring real progress to Afghanistan’s recovery, while deepening economic and cultural links between the two neighbors.
