India has just shipped more than 16 tonnes of medicine to Afghanistan, a move that the Taliban spokesperson Sharafat Zaman announced on Sunday. The shipment includes drugs and diagnostic kits aimed at fighting vector‑borne illnesses such as malaria, dengue and leishmaniasis.
Zaman said the supplies will feed into Afghanistan’s National Malaria and Other Vector‑Borne Diseases Prevention Programme. By giving doctors and labs more tools, India hopes to boost the country’s ability to cut down on these deadly diseases that keep hurting people in many regions.
The Afghan Ministry of Public Health welcomed the help. Officials said the medicine and kits are a vital step toward stronger health infrastructure, especially in high‑risk communities that need quick disease control. They thanked India for the timely support and said it underscores a long‑standing partnership between the two countries.
This aid comes after Afghanistan’s foreign minister, Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi, visited New Delhi last month. During that visit, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar handed over five ambulances to Afghanistan and discussed projects that support the country’s development, trade, and people‑to‑people ties.
On October 10, the Ministry of External Affairs added that India also delivered extra food supplies to Afghan communities affected by a recent earthquake. These actions show India’s continued focus on humanitarian cooperation in the region.
