In Kollam, Kerala, Union Health Minister and BJP national president J.P. Nadda tackled a key issue during his recent visit: the long-standing push for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in the state. Speaking at a BJP state executive meeting in Thiruvananthapuram on Saturday, Nadda recognized Kerala’s strong desire for better healthcare facilities and promised that the central government is seriously reviewing the proposal.
“The demand for an AIIMS in Kerala is recognized, and at the right time, we’ll announce it and set it up in the right place,” Nadda said. He stressed that boosting healthcare infrastructure across India remains a top priority for the Union government, with Kerala’s request high on the agenda as part of efforts to strengthen medical education and services nationwide.
Kerala has pressed for its own AIIMS for years, pointing to the need for cutting-edge medical research and top-notch patient care. State Health Minister Veena George echoed this call, pushing the Centre to speed things up. “Kerala’s people have waited a long time for an AIIMS, and we hope the central government prioritizes this soon,” she added.
Talks about where to build the AIIMS in Kerala are heating up, with the state eyeing spots like land in Kinalur near Kozhikode. But the final call lies with New Delhi, focusing on feasibility and location details.
Adding to the buzz, Union Minister of State Suresh Gopi has voiced support for placing the AIIMS in Alappuzha district, arguing it would fix the area’s weak healthcare setup and drive local growth. If politics blocks that, Gopi said he’d push for Thrissur, his own parliamentary area.
Gopi’s comments stirred debate within the Kerala BJP. Party leaders quickly clarified that they don’t back his specific location picks—it’s all up to the Centre’s standard criteria. They stressed that Gopi’s views are personal, not the official party line on the AIIMS Kerala project.
