Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 2 – The city of Kochi has confirmed its first case of amoebic meningoencephalitis, a serious brain infection that can be fatal. The patient, a 25‑year‑old woman from Lakshadweep, currently stays in a hostel and is being treated at a private hospital. Health workers report that she is stable and recovering.
She arrived with fever and a severe headache. Early tests for amoebic encephalitis were negative, but a third microscopic exam of a wet mount revealed the harmful amoeba. A health department spokesperson said, “She is totally stable and recovering well. We are verifying her recent travel to determine the incubation period.”
Kerala has seen a worrying rise in the disease. This year, the state recorded 153 cases and 33 deaths. The most recent death was a 65‑year‑old woman from Palathara in Kollam district. In October alone, 65 new cases were confirmed, showing an upward trend.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is conducting a detailed study to find where the infection spreads. Researchers are surveying four districts—Kozhikode, Malappuram, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kollam—to track how the disease transmits. The study looks at common sources, including contaminated water and open wounds.
Health officials warn that free‑living amoebae live in ponds, lakes, and other untreated water sources. The bacteria can enter the body through cuts or the nasal cavity. The state health department recently updated its advice, urging elderly and immunocompromised people to avoid washing wounds or feet in contaminated water. In many recent cases, patients cleaned wounds with pond water.
While authorities investigate the exact source of the Kochi case, they urge the public to stay cautious. Keep wounds clean, use treated water, and avoid contact with natural bodies of water after the monsoon season. Staying alert and practicing good hygiene can help reduce the risk of this dangerous brain infection.
