A serious health mystery is unfolding in a small village in Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district. Over the past few months, around 30 people in Turkapalem village, which has about 3,000 residents, have died under unclear circumstances. Recently, three more deaths were reported in just four days, raising concern among both villagers and health officials. In response, the Andhra Pradesh government has stepped in. Following directions from State Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav, a top medical team led by Director of Medical Education G. Raghunandan will visit Turkapalem to find out what’s causing these deaths. So far, local health experts haven’t been able to determine the exact cause. They’re investigating issues like fever and infections, but nothing conclusive has come out yet. To get to the root of the problem, the government team will collect blood samples from families of the deceased, and will also analyze water and other environmental samples from the village. Fever cases have surged in recent weeks, prompting officials to take action. The municipal authorities have launched a major sanitation drive, spraying insecticides and removing mosquito breeding sites. These efforts aim to control the spread of mosquito-borne diseases, which can sometimes cause serious health issues. Meanwhile, specialists from Guntur Medical College are also involved. A dedicated team from six different departments is examining the situation, meeting with affected families, and reviewing medical histories. This thorough investigation aims to identify if any specific bacteria, viruses, or other causes are behind the mysterious deaths. One key discovery was the confirmation of two cases of melioidosis, a rare but dangerous bacterial infection. This finding has led to increased screening and health monitoring in the village to prevent further spread. In addition, a 15-day medical camp has been set up in Turkapalem. Experts from microbiology, biochemistry, general medicine, psychiatry, and social medicine are working together to provide care, gather information, and better understand the health crisis. Local health officials and teams remain committed to solving this mystery quickly. The investigation continues, with the aim of protecting the villagers and bringing clarity to what has caused these tragic deaths.
