At the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh, a quiet but significant change is underway. On Saturday, the hospital welcomed 287 army veterans as its newest security guards, boosting its total protective force to 1,000 personnel. The ceremony took place in the institute’s NINE Auditorium and was attended by senior leaders, including Director Vivek Lal, Deputy Director Pankaj Rai, and Acting Medical Superintendent Ashok Kumar.
PGIMER’s director said the discipline and training that ex‑soldiers bring will tighten security and support the hospital’s expansion plans. “These veterans add unmatched vigilance, integrity, and crisis‑management skills to our environment,” he explained. “Their presence helps keep patients, staff, and visitors safe as we grow.”
The security upgrade comes just before PGIMER plans to open two new centers by January 2026: a Neurosciences Centre and a Mother‑and‑Child Centre. The Standing Finance Committee already approved an extra 300 guard posts to cover the enlarged campus.
Security plays a vital role in a large medical complex, and PGIMER’s move signals a clear commitment to patient‑centric care. The director highlighted that safer surroundings will let the institute roll out 24‑hour diagnostic services, easing the burden on patients.
By adding disciplined ex‑army personnel through Punjab Ex‑Servicemen Corporation (PESCO), PGIMER is setting an example for public health institutions across India. The initiative underscores the hospital’s unwavering focus on safety, efficiency, and the well‑being of everyone who steps through its doors.
