The almost-Ranger who now could answer a crucial defense question

Back in 2012, during the short lockout season, the New York Rangers needed more muscle on the right side of their defense. They had their eyes on a promising young defenseman named Andrej Sustr, a towering 6-foot-7 player fresh out of college at age 22.
The Rangers felt confident they had landed him to bolster their blue line. But things didn’t go as planned.
Instead, Sustr signed with the Tampa Bay Lightning, who offered the Czech native from Plzen, Czechia, a better shot at breaking into the NHL. Sustr had built his skills step by step: one season in the NAHL, another in the USHL, and two strong years at the University of Nebraska-Omaha in college hockey.
That move to Tampa kicked off Sustr’s pro career, leaving Rangers fans wondering what might have been for this big Czech defenseman.
