Jaipur – The wife of Rajasthan’s Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani, Indira Devi, died Monday in the city’s Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital.
She slipped into the intensive‑care unit after a sudden health collapse at her home. Doctors crossed paths with her long‑standing asthma and other chronic conditions, but her condition stayed critical. The ICU team fought hard, but she ultimately breathed her last during treatment.
The news has shocked politicians and ordinary citizens across Rajasthan. After she passed, lawmakers and the public gathered in the speaker’s official residence in Civil Lines, where her body lay for a brief final darshan.
The state’s chief political figure, governor Haribhau Bagde, paid his respects that afternoon, offering flowers and words of comfort to the bereaved family.
Her body will be moved to the family home in Ajmer on Tuesday morning at 6 a.m. The funeral procession begins at 10:30 a.m., heading to the Rishi Valley Crematorium. The cremation ceremony will conclude at 10 p.m. on Tuesday.
Indira Devi was a retired school teacher. She and Devnani married in 1974 and have three children—one son and two daughters. Devnani, who hails from Ajmer and serves the party Bharatiya Janata Party, has sat as Rajasthan’s Assembly Speaker since 2023.
The sudden loss of a beloved spouse draws attention to ongoing health concerns and the importance of early medical intervention. Rajasthan’s political community mourns a respected teacher and wife, as well as a key public servant’s family.
