Dhaka – The death toll from dengue in Bangladesh rose to 220 this year after three more people died in the first 24 hours of Wednesday. Local reports, backed by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), show that the number of confirmed cases has now reached 52,104.

In the past day, 700 patients were admitted to hospitals with viral fever, adding to the current load of 2,473 people being treated across the country. The new deaths were recorded in both the Dhaka South and Dhaka North City Corporations, according to the United News of Bangladesh.

DGHS data also revealed where new cases are spiking: 155 in Dhaka North City, 149 in Dhaka Division, 110 in Dhaka South City, 105 in Barishal Division, 61 in Chattogram Division, 45 in Khulna, 33 in Mymensingh, 31 in Rajshahi, 6 in Rangpur and 5 in Sylhet.

Bangladesh’s dengue story isn’t new. In 2024, 575 people died from the mosquito‑borne virus, while 101,214 cases and 100,040 recoveries were reported. The disease spreads when mosquitoes bite infected humans, and its peak occurs in tropical and sub‑tropical zones—often in urban and semi‑urban areas, according to the World Health Organization.

There’s no specific cure for dengue, so early detection and prompt medical care are key to reducing deaths. The DGHS urges anyone with a fever to seek a dengue test right away and to get treatment if the results are positive.

“Delaying hospitalisation is a major reason why dengue fatalities increase,” said DGHS Director Abu Hussain Moinul Ahsan. He added that late arrivals can turn a treatable infection into a severe one, making successful recovery harder.

Hospitals across Bangladesh are stocked with necessary medicines, saline solutions, and dengue test kits. The DGHS stresses that rapid testing, guideline‑based treatment, and rigorous mosquito control must go hand in hand to curb the outbreak.

Community members are encouraged to watch for symptoms, cover themselves to avoid mosquito bites, and seek early medical help if fever or joint pain appears. By acting fast, Bangladesh can protect more lives from dengue.
