In New Delhi on Sunday, the Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker, Vijender Gupta, spotlighted Swami Dayanand Saraswati, calling him the “true architect of India’s freedom.” The remarks were part of the International Arya Samaj Conference, which celebrated 150 years of the Arya Samaj movement in Rohini.
Gupta told the gathered crowd that Swami Dayanand was not just a spiritual teacher but a spark that lit the fire of India’s independence. “His teachings ignited the flame of revolution that later illuminated the entire nation,” he said, stressing that truth and justice were the moral engine behind the freedom struggle.
The event also drew Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, Punean DAV Management boss Punam Suri, and Arya Samaj’s international president, Surender, along with delegates from across India and abroad.
Speaker Gupta praised the lasting impact of Swami Dayanand’s work. He reminded everyone that “Satyarth Prakash” — a book that clarified his philosophy — helped awaken society and laid the cultural foundation for a new India. “During his era, the main need was independence,” Gupta added, noting that Swami Dayanand’s call for truth “was the moral force behind India’s freedom struggle.”
He also highlighted how the saint’s ideas inspired prominent revolutionaries like Lala Lajpat Rai and Ram Prasad Bismil. “Shri Swami Shraddhanand,” Gupta noted, “brought Swami Dayanand’s legacy to the next generation with bravery and devotion.” He recalled Shraddhanand’s leadership during the 1919 Delhi Satyagraha, calling it the first spark of the Jallianwala Bagh movement. “When the British opened fire on peaceful protesters at Chandni Chowk, he stood at the front,” he said, quoting Mahatma Gandhi who had referred to Swami Shraddhanand as “the law of Delhi.”
Gupta also made a historical link between the Delhi Legislative Assembly and the old Imperial Legislative Council, calling the latter “the country’s first Parliament.” He reminded listeners that the notorious Rowlatt Act, passed in 1919 in that very council, fueled Gandhi’s Satyagraha movement and strengthened the call for an end to British rule. “Swami Shraddhanand helped give the movement its shape in Delhi,” he said, reinforcing the idea that the saint’s influence was integral to India’s journey to independence.
The conference celebrated Arya Samaj’s 150‑year anniversary, highlighting how its principles of truth (“satyarth”) and communal harmony, championed by figures like Swami Dayanand and Swami Shraddhanand, remain relevant today. The event underscored the enduring legacy of these leaders who helped light the way for a free, just India.
