India and Lithuania Strengthen Ties: Key Talks on Tech and Cultural Links
In a recent meeting in New Delhi, India’s Ministry of External Affairs Secretary (West), Sibi George, sat down with Julius Pranevicius, Vice-Minister of Lithuania’s Foreign Ministry. The two leaders talked about boosting India-Lithuania bilateral relations and exploring new ways to work together, especially in high technology.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared the details on X, saying, "Secretary (West) Sibi George met Mr. Julius Pranevicius, Vice-Minister, Lithuanian Foreign Ministry in New Delhi today. They discussed the progress in the bilateral relations and the prospect of diversifying cooperation including in high technology." This comes as part of ongoing efforts to deepen ties between the two nations.
Back in March, Lithuania’s Foreign Secretary Laimonas Talat-Kelpsa praised the strong bond between India and Lithuania during an interview with . He called their relationship "very good" with only positive elements, creating a solid base for future collaboration.
Talat-Kelpsa highlighted practical steps already underway. "We have already identified certain areas which are producing very practical results," he said. One key focus is cultural and people-to-people cooperation. This year marks 400 years since the first Lithuanian arrived in India, and they’re planning big commemorations, including projects in Goa where that historic arrival happened. "We think it’s a good opportunity to commemorate this at a larger scale and at a higher level," he added, hinting at upcoming visits from Lithuania.
He also pointed out the fascinating link between the Lithuanian language and Sanskrit, which helps connect Lithuania to Indian society. "Everyone knows in India, I guess, that Lithuanian language is connected to Sanskrit," Talat-Kelpsa noted. This cultural tie feels even more special now, as Lithuania rebuilds its global presence after 50 years under Soviet occupation, when it lost its embassy in India and missed chances that other European countries grabbed post-World War II.
These discussions show growing excitement around India-Lithuania relations, from tech partnerships to shared history. As both countries look ahead, expect more joint projects to bring them closer.
