The closing ceremony of the 63rd Walong Day took place this Sunday in Walong, Arunachal Pradesh, to honor the bravery of Indian soldiers who fought the 1962 Battle of Walong.
Defence spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Mahendra Rawat said the event was attended by senior Army officers—Lieutenant General R.C. Tiwari, Chief of the Eastern Army; Lieutenant General VMB Krishnan, Quarter‑Master General; and Lieutenant General Abhijit S. Pendharkar, the Spear Corps commander—as well as Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein. Veterans of the 1962 war and their families also joined the gathering.
The celebrations began on Saturday, November 15, with a vibrant lineup that included a light‑and‑sound show, a drone display, a sand‑art installation, and musical and cultural performances by local artists and the Indian Army. These performances highlighted the region’s artistic energy while telling the story of the courage shown by the Indian soldiers.
On Sunday, the ceremony opened with a solemn wreath‑laying at the Walong War Memorial. The crowd then saw the unveiling of new statues dedicated to the heroes of the Battle of Walong. Cultural presentations added a traditional touch, and the event concluded with a felicitation ceremony that honored war veterans and participants who helped make the day’s activities possible.
The closing ceremony was not just a tribute to the Indian Army’s bravery and patriotism; it also celebrated the strong civil‑military bond in Walong. Lieutenant Colonel Rawat said that the commemorations echo “pride, remembrance and an immortal spirit that continues to inspire new generations.”
Walong Day is observed each mid‑November by the Indian Army to remember the raw courage of a few hundred soldiers who held their ground against a heavily armed Chinese force for 27 days. In addition to military personnel and government officials, a large number of civilians attended this year’s commemoration to honor the brave hearts of the past.
