In Gujarat’s Dahod district, Nanu Bhai’s touching story is stealing the spotlight as India’s Ayushman Bharat scheme marks seven years since its launch. This flagship program from the Modi government has changed lives by offering free healthcare to millions, and Nanu Bhai’s experience shows just how.
Nanu Bhai, a resident of Dahod, struggled with intense knee pain that left him unable to walk without help. Private hospitals quoted sky-high prices for knee surgery, making it seem impossible. But everything changed when he got his Ayushman card under the Ayushman Bharat–Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, or PM-JAY. At a private hospital, he underwent the procedure completely free—no bills for the surgery, medicines, or even his Rs 300 auto ride there. The scheme even reimbursed his travel costs, a bonus he never expected.
The story went viral on X through the popular “Modi Story” account, where Nanu Bhai shared his journey from pain to relief. What made it even more special? A personal chat with Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a public event in Dahod. Backstage, Modi asked about his health, remembered the knee surgery, and gave some heartfelt advice: “Now reduce your weight—that’s the key to getting the full benefit.” Nanu Bhai, moved to tears, said it felt just like guidance from his own mother.
Launched on September 23, 2018, Ayushman Bharat stands as the world’s largest healthcare initiative. It delivers up to Rs 5 lakh in free health insurance per family each year for secondary and tertiary care. This covers over 12 crore vulnerable families—about 55 crore people, or 40% of India’s population—and works in both government and private hospitals. From surgeries like Nanu Bhai’s to everyday treatments, the scheme keeps free healthcare accessible and eases the burden on low-income families across the country.
