In Mumbai on December 5, LatestNewsX reports that Shiv Sena‑UBT leader and former Maharashtra minister Aditya Thackeray voiced strong concerns about the city’s worsening garbage situation and the unchecked spread of political hoardings.
He sent a letter to the BMC Commissioner, Bhushan Gagrani, pointing out the sudden breakdown of a system that had run smoothly for over a decade. The leader highlighted that, in recent years, garbage collection has frequently fallen behind schedule across many streets. “Garbage is now piling up not only in remote corners but also at several junctions, important roads, religious sites, and outside residential buildings,” he added.
Thackeray questioned the commissioner about the exact cause of the missed pickups, asking if the mechanism had changed, the contractor redirected, or the BMC’s own workforce reassigned. He also addressed the persistent issue of illegal political posters and banners, recalling a long‑standing court order that banned them. He suggested that the BMC is now interpreting this order selectively, allowing hoardings owned by ministers or their allies to remain for at least two weeks.
He noted that whenever foreign dignitaries visit, the state government tends to erect numerous illegal hoardings, which only adds to the chaos in Mumbai. The leader accused officials of taking action only against opposition groups and local council members.
Thackeray has already written to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging an end to what he calls this “race” of illegal hoardings. He believes a clear ban would resolve the problem entirely, but has yet to receive any reply. He is hoping to hear back shortly and expects the BMC Commissioner to take appropriate measures.
Earlier this month, Thackeray criticized the state administration for the worsening air quality in Mumbai, citing a poor AQI level. “Even as the AQI of Mumbai gets terrible each day, and we compete with Delhi in the ‘terrible AQI’ race, the governments from top to bottom, currently controlled by the BJP and its allies, conveniently ignore the plight of the people,” he said. He laid blame on the administration for prioritizing construction, tree felling and “development” at the expense of the environment.
