Guwahati, September 19: Assam’s beloved singer Zubeen Garg has left fans heartbroken after his tragic death in a scuba diving accident in Singapore. The news hit hard on Friday, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma leading the tributes to the voice that defined Assamese music for generations.
CM Sarma shared his grief on X (formerly Twitter), calling Zubeen one of Assam’s favorite sons. "Today Assam lost one of its favourite sons. I am at a loss for words to describe what Zubeen meant for Assam. He has gone too early; this was not an age to go," he wrote. He praised Zubeen’s energetic voice that touched hearts and souls, saying it left a void no one can fill. Sarma added that future generations will see Zubeen as a pillar of Assam’s culture, inspiring new artists. He also remembered Zubeen’s passion for helping people and their personal chats. "That magical voice has forever gone silent. Tragic beyond words! I grieve with my fellow citizens on the passing away of Zubeen. Rest well, Zubeen! You will always be Assam’s favourite rockstar," the CM concluded.
Even opposition leaders joined in the sorrow. Congress leader Ripun Bora expressed shock over the loss of this cultural icon. "Deeply shocked and saddened by the untimely demise of our cultural icon Zubeen Garg. His voice, music, and indomitable spirit inspired generations across Assam and beyond. My heartfelt condolences to his family, fans, and loved ones. Rest in peace, Legend," Bora said.
What happened to Zubeen Garg? The 51-year-old singer was scuba diving off Singapore’s coast on Thursday night when the accident struck. Police divers pulled him from the water and rushed him to a hospital, but despite intensive care, doctors couldn’t save him.
