In Kochi on November 18, Malayalam film and TV star Urmila Unni joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a move the party says will strengthen its cultural outreach in Kerala.
The ceremony, held in the city, saw Urmila take the BJP membership card in front of senior BJP leaders and fellow film industry figures. Producer G. Suresh Kumar, among the guests, highlighted how many in the Malayalam film fraternity are now eyeing politics.
Known for her dance background and long‑running TV serials, Urmila said she joined the BJP because she admires Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for development and national progress. “I am a Modi fan,” she told reporters, adding that she wants to stay active in both culture and public service.
Her decision comes just before Kerala’s local body elections, and political analysts think the star’s entry could give the BJP a boost among urban voters and those engaged in the arts. The party’s strategy of recruiting popular cultural figures echoes earlier moves that have drawn more film personalities into its ranks in the state.
Urmila’s membership is expected to lift the BJP’s campaign narrative in Kerala, adding symbolic weight to its push to grow its influence in the region’s social and cultural landscape. Her clear endorsement of Modi and the party’s leadership may help the BJP reach a wider audience among cinema fans and cultural supporters.
The announcement was widely covered across social media and news outlets, marking a significant moment for the BJP’s outreach in Kerala’s dynamic political scene.
