Bhopal, Dec. 3 (LatestNewsX) – On December 4, South Africa‑originated female cheetah Veera (which bears an Indian name) and her twin, each 10 months old, are set to be released into the wilderness of Kuno National Park in Sheopur district. The ceremony, overseen by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, will coincide with International Cheetah Day and also mark the launch of the park’s 2026 calendar and a field manual for free‑ranging cheetah care.

Yadav will open a new souvenir shop in the park after the government’s earlier announcement. The PM’s Project Cheetah – launched in Madhya Prachad three years ago on his birthday, 17 September 2022 – first brought eight cheetahs from Namibia to Kuno, and later 12 more from South Africa in February 2023. Since then, the combined cheetah count in Kuno and the Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary has risen to 32.

Over the past three years, five females have birthed a total of six cubs, indicating both survival and successful reproduction among the relocated animals. “The main objective of International Cheetah Day is to raise awareness about declining Cheetah populations, habitat loss and poaching, while promoting global efforts for their conservation,” the government stated.

Uttam Kumar Sharma, Additional Principal Chief Conservation of Forests and Director of the Lion Project, confirmed that the release will occur in the Parond Forest area, a designated tourism zone. He added that ongoing monitoring will employ advanced radio‑tracking and dedicated field teams to safeguard the cheetahs’ adaptation to the wild.

The event is expected to boost ecotourism, fostering greater public engagement and support for the Project Cheetah.
