Air pollution: Delhi CM promises Ujjwala LPG connection for slum dwellers using wood for cooking

New Delhi – 8 Nov 2024 – Delhi’s Chief Minister Rekha Gupta says the city is on a “war footing” to cut air pollution. Today she ordered the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) to pick out slum households that still cook with wood or coal and to connect them to the Ujjwala Yojana gas scheme.
“By giving these families a clean‑fuel connection, we’ll help them stop using polluting fuels,” Gupta said. She stressed that pollution is not just an industrial or traffic issue – it starts at home. Smoke from old stoves and makeshift fireplaces in slums is worsening air quality and harming residents’ health.
The chief minister added that the Delhi government is already busy cleaning up hot spots in the city. Teams from the Public Works Department, Irrigation and Flood Control, DUSIB, Delhi State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and other bodies are out on the streets. They’re removing dust, repairing roads and footpaths with cement, and spraying mist to keep dust at bay.
“Delhi’s top priority is to become a cleaner city,” Gupta told reporters. “We’re working hard to give every family access to clean cooking gas and to eliminate the sources of pollution in our communities.”
