In a big win for animal welfare, the Supreme Court of India has cleared Vantara, the wildlife rescue facility in Gujarat’s Jamnagar, of all serious allegations. This comes after a detailed probe by a Special Investigation Team (SIT), which found no wrongdoing in how the center handles animals, including elephants from India and abroad.
The court’s decision, made by Justices Pankaj Mithal and Prasanna B. Varale, dismissed claims about breaking the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, or ignoring global rules like the CITES treaty on endangered species. It also put to rest worries over veterinary care, animal welfare standards, and even accusations of financial misconduct or creating a private zoo.
Team Vantara, the group behind the facility, shared their joy in a heartfelt statement. “We’re truly grateful for the SIT’s findings and the Supreme Court’s order,” they said. “This clears up all the baseless doubts about our mission to rescue and heal animals. It’s a huge relief and lets our work shine through.”
They added that this validation strengthens their commitment to compassionate care for animals and birds that can’t speak for themselves. “Every rescue and every life we save reminds us that animal well-being is tied to our own humanity,” the team noted. Vantara has always focused on love and responsibility toward these voiceless creatures.
Looking ahead, Vantara pledged to team up with the Indian government and other groups to improve animal care across the board. “We’re ready to collaborate and make our planet better for all living beings,” they said.
The whole story started back in August when the Supreme Court set up the SIT to dig into these wide-ranging charges. The team, led by former Chief Justice Raghvendra Chauhan, ex-Mumbai Police Commissioner Hemant Nagrale, and senior IRS officer Anish Gupta, wrapped up their report last week and submitted it in a sealed envelope. Now, with the court’s green light, Vantara can keep pushing forward in wildlife conservation and animal rescue efforts.
