On Thursday, the chief of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and actor Vijay asked the police for permission to travel to Karur, where he plans to meet the families of people who were killed or wounded in a deadly stamp‑deem that took place on September 27.
The stamp‑deed happened during Vijay’s first big political roadshow. Around 30,000 people packed the Veluchapirampuram area far beyond the venue’s capacity. Long delays and the crowd’s surge when Vijay climbed onto his campaign vehicle caused chaos. The tragedy left 41 people dead and more than 60 injured, sending shock waves through Tamil Nadu and beyond.
After the incident, politicians from both sides of the spectrum—Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Opposition Leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami—visited Karur to console the bereaved. The Tamil Nadu government announced an ex‑gratia payment of ₹10 lakh to each family of a victim, while TVK pledged ₹20 lakh per family. Yet many people felt Vijay should be there in person.
In response, Vijay posted a heartfelt video on social media, saying he was deeply saddened and that he would visit Karur himself. TVK’s publicity secretary, Arunraj, added that Vijay has already spoken to the families of 33 victims through video calls. “We have emailed the Director General of Police (DGP) requesting approval for Vijay’s trip,” Arunraj told reporters. “Today our leaders also went to the DGP’s office in Chennai to submit a formal request.”
The letter asks the police to provide security for Vijay’s visit, because large crowds could flock to the rally site. TVK leaders say they will go as soon as the police clear the way and set up safe arrangements.
Officials have not yet announced when permission might be granted. But members of TVK are determined to meet the families and offer condolences in person, fulfilling Vijay’s promise and showing support for the communities still grieving the loss of their loved ones.
