The blast that rocked Delhi’s Red Fort Metro area on November 10 left at least 13 people dead and many injured. The car that exploded was driven by Dr Umar Mohammad, a doctor from Faridabad’s Al Falah University who had become a suspect in the case.
A short video shot by Dr Umar surfaced online a few days after the attack. In the clip he explains his intent, calling the act a “martyrdom operation” and trying to frame the suicide bombing as a religious duty. He says it is a type of martyrdom when someone knows they will die at a specific time and place.
The video has drawn sharp criticism from Islamic leaders. Maulana Mufti Shahabuddin Razvi, president of the All‑India Muslim Jamaat National, spoke to and said that the actions of Dr Umar could not be justified by Islam. He said, “Terrorism, killing other people, and even killing oneself are forbidden in Islam. The Qur’an says that killing one person is like killing all of humanity.” He added that Dr Umar’s “martyrdom operation” is “haram” – prohibited – and “against the fundamental beliefs of Islam.”
The case expanded after police raids in Faridabad on November 9. They seized almost 2,900 kg of ammonium nitrate from a storage facility and arrested several associates. Investigators found that Dr Umar had left his university duties on October 30, travelled frequently between Faridabad and Delhi, and visited mosques near the Ramleela Maidan and Sunehri Masjid. He was reported missing after the raid.
Further evidence shows Dr Umar and Dr Muzammil, who were later caught, had traveled to Turkey—believed to be the base of their handlers. The discovery of large quantities of explosive material and ties to a broader terror network underscores the seriousness of the threat.
Indian authorities continue to investigate the plot, reconstruct the chain of command, and track suspects linked to the terrorist network. Meanwhile, religious leaders across the country condemn the use of “martyrdom” as a cover for violent attacks, stressing that Islam promotes peace and condemns the taking of life.
