Ahmedabad, December 7 – The city’s municipal corporation celebrated a major development push today. Across a swath of the city, 28 projects were officially opened, amounting to Rs 525 crore, while ground‑breakings marked 30 additional schemes worth another Rs 982 crore, bringing the total budgeted work to Rs 1,507 crore.
The day’s highlights included a draw for 465 affordable homes built under the Mukhyamantri Awas Yojana and 1,573 units under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. Home Minister Amit Shah handed out symbolic keys to the lucky winners, a small but poignant gesture that drew cheers from the crowd.
At Devnagar, the minister also kicked off construction of a new mini sports complex. Meanwhile, 102 newly recruited assistant firemen received their appointment letters from the AMC office, a reminder of the city’s growing focus on public safety.
Shah took the stage to remind everyone that Ahmedabad is steadily gearing up to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games and is eyeing the 2036 Olympics. He praised the city’s sports infrastructure, from world‑class stadiums to tiny community hubs tucked under flyovers, which together give local kids a chance to play. He linked Gujarat’s earlier Khel Mahakumbh initiative to the nation‑wide Khelo India programme, underlining a push for both body and mind fitness among the youth.
He also talked about several standout projects that will put Ahmedabad on the global sports map: the colossal cricket stadium in the city, the soon‑to‑open Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, and a raft of other developments. In addition to sports, he highlighted Gujarat’s major infrastructure wins – the world’s largest renewable energy park, the Dholera greenfield smart city, the Surat‑Chennai corridor, the Mumbai‑Ahmedabad bullet train and the country’s first fintech hub, GIFT City.
Speaking on broader national progress, Shah credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for elevating India’s global standing, noting advances in security, infrastructure, agriculture, irrigation and the economy. He celebrated the Ayodhya Ram Temple milestones – the 2019 land‑sacred‑ceremony, the 2024 ceremonial inauguration and the forthcoming flag‑hoisting in 2025 – framing them as historic achievements under the PM’s leadership.
Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel joined the festivities, praising Amit Shah for steering development in the Gandhinagar Lok Sabha area. Over recent years, the constituency has seen more than Rs 22,551 crore in projects. Patel said Ahmedabad is on track to become India’s sports capital, with the upcoming Commonwealth Games catalysing new infrastructure and global visibility. He highlighted upgrades in roads, water supply, drainage and storm‑water management, as well as the transformation of public spaces like parks, libraries and sports complexes.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban), Patel noted that Gujarat has built more than 1.3 million homes. He also pointed out the city’s expanding green cover – 2.8 million trees planted, Miyawaki style urban forests, lake rejuvenation projects and the creation of oxygen parks – all contributing to a greener, healthier urban ecosystem.
In addition to the projects already opened, Shah inaugurated several key developments across the city: 881 economically‑based housing units at Thaltej (Tulsi Residency), the Electrotherm Garden in South Bopal, the redeveloped Narsinh Mehta Lake in Vastrapur, Shri Kshetra Sarovar in Sarkhej, the Narayanrao Bhandari open party plot in Memnagar, 350 rehabilitation houses near New Wadaj–Natna Chapra and a new mini sports complex in Gota. He also visited a sports activity centre near the Ranip Railway Over‑bridge, as well as the fresh gymnasium and library at New Ranip.
