Akali Dal chief flags off 100 trucks of maize silage for flood-hit areas of Punjab

In Chandigarh on Saturday, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Badal kicked off a major flood relief effort by launching 100 trucks loaded with maize silage. The shipment heads to Gurdaspur and Jalandhar districts in Punjab, where it’s badly needed as fodder for livestock hit hard by recent floods.

Badal told reporters at the grain market that SAD workers who visited the flood-damaged areas spotted a serious shortage of animal feed. That’s why the party stepped in to buy and distribute the maize silage right away. At the same time, many poor families shared stories of running low on food after losing their jobs and homes for a full month. In response, SAD plans to hand out wheat supplies to 50,000 of these flood-affected families over the next 30 days.

The relief doesn’t stop there. Badal announced that SAD and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) will each provide certified seeds for 100,000 acres of farmland—covering a total of 200,000 acres damaged by the Punjab floods. He urged the state government to step up and supply seeds for the remaining 200,000 acres to fully support farmers’ recovery.

Badal also called on Punjab authorities to give away DAP fertilizer for free to growers across all 400,000 affected acres. Plus, he pushed for government tractors to help clear sand and debris from the fields. On SAD’s side, the party will soon launch a “tractor sewa” program, offering free diesel to farmers tackling the cleanup themselves.

To keep everything on track, SAD has set up a monitoring committee to oversee the flood relief operations. Badal stressed the party’s dedication to getting farmers and farm laborers back on their feet. “Our Akali volunteers will roll up their sleeves and work alongside them to restore the fields,” he said.

Finally, Badal made a heartfelt plea to other political parties and people across India to join in aiding Punjab’s flood-stricken communities. “The Khalsa Panth and Punjabis have always rushed to help those facing disasters nationwide,” he noted. “Now, it’s our turn to get support in this tough time.”
