Akhilesh ‘misleading’ voters fearing defeat: UP Deputy CM on SP chief’s ‘SIR misuse’ remark

New Delhi, Nov 23 (LatestNewsX) – After the SP chief Akhilesh Yadav accused the BJP and the Election Commission of India of “misusing” the ongoing Special Intensive Revision process, Uttar Pradesh’s deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya told reporters that Yadav’s comments reveal “nervousness” because his own party lacks a solid grassroots base.

Maurya added that following the NDA’s win in the recent Bihar polls, Yadav had bragged he would triumph in Awadh and defeat the coalition in Magadh. “But we won in Magadh and we’ll take Awadh as well in 2027,” he said, dismissing the doubts raised by the opposition.

BJP spokesman Shahnawaz Hussain also fired back at the SP leader, saying that after tasting defeat in Bihar, Yadav and his team are now inventing excuses. “They already know the Samajwadi Party will fared badly in Uttar Pradesh, so they’re pre‑making narratives,” he noted, comparing the situation to the arguments uttered by Rahul Gandhi and Tejashwi Yadav during the SIR, and accusing Yadav of following in their footsteps.

Both sides claimed that the BJP has no right to meddle with the electoral process and that the SP chief is trying to mislead voters in the run‑up to the next Assembly elections.

Yadav returned the flak, blaming the BJP and the Election Commission for “misusing” the SIR of the electoral rolls. He alleged that the BJP was collaborating with the EC to “cancel” more than 50,000 votes in Assembly segments where INDIA‑bloc parties performed strongly in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

He warned that the SIR in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal is being carried out in a “targeted manner,” suggesting a political motive behind the voter verification drive.

The Election Commission is presently carrying out the SIR across 12 states and Union Territories, with the final electoral roll slated for release on February 7, 2026.
