MP: Two women killed as bus plunges into 20-feet gorge near Mhow, several injured

A private bus went off the road and tumbled into a 20‑foot‑deep gorge near Mhow, a town renamed Ambedkar Nagar, in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district, police said. The crash left two women dead and several passengers injured.

The accident happened on a sharp bend at Bherughat in the Simrol village area, a hilly stretch where similar incidents have occurred before. Eyewitnesses said the bus lost control and plunged into the ravine while moving through the turn.

About 30 people were aboard the bus. Passersby and villagers from Simrol rushed to the scene and, using ropes and their bare hands, pulled a number of trapped passengers out of the wreckage before emergency teams arrived.

Sub‑Divisional Magistrate Rakesh Parmar, who is overseeing the rescue, confirmed that police and fire crews were at the site early this morning. “Two women died on the spot. We’re still identifying them while medical teams work to help the rest of the passengers,” he said.

The injured—many with fractures, head injuries and bruises—were taken to nearby hospitals in Mhow and to Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital in Indore. Ambulances jostled for space on the route, which had heavy traffic the next day.

Preliminary investigations point to possible overspeeding or a mechanical failure, but the driver is alive and is being questioned. The bus had been traveling from Omkareshwar town, carrying daily commuters and local residents.

The rescue effort continues into Monday evening, and authorities warn that the death toll could rise if additional bodies are found. Families are anxiously waiting for updates on their loved ones in hospitals.

The incident highlights the dangers of Indore’s winding roads, where poor guard‑rails and sudden fog can make even a routine journey risky. Road safety officials say urgent upgrades to barriers and better signage are needed to prevent future tragedies.
