Justice M. Sundar took oath as the new Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court today in a special ceremony at the Raj Bhavan in Imphal. Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla administered the oath to him in the Darbar Hall, marking a big moment for the state’s judiciary.
President Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice Sundar, who comes from the Madras High Court, on September 13. This happened right after the retirement of the previous Chief Justice, Kempaiah Somashekar, on September 14. The Supreme Court Collegium had recommended his name just two days earlier, on September 11.
The event saw a strong turnout, including Manipur Assembly Speaker Thokchom Satyabrata Singh, several MLAs, fellow High Court judges, Chief Secretary Puneet Kumar Goel, Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, Director General of Police Rajiv Singh, and officials from civil, police, military, and judicial services. Representatives from Bar Associations also joined in to celebrate.
Born on July 19, 1966, in Chennai, Justice Sundar studied law at Madras Law College. He was in the first batch of the five-year integrated law course and started practicing as an advocate in 1989. Before becoming a judge, he handled a variety of civil cases at the Madras High Court and even served as Standing Counsel for the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board from 2003 to 2006. He got elevated as a permanent judge of the Madras High Court on October 5, 2016.
The Manipur High Court, established in March 2013, serves as a key judicial hub for the state, alongside the High Courts in Meghalaya and Tripura. Before that, all northeastern states except Sikkim fell under the Gauhati High Court. With Justice Sundar’s appointment, the court continues to strengthen justice delivery in the region.
