In Ayodhya, senior Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad threw his full support behind party chief Akhilesh Yadav’s promise to drop all legal cases against veteran leader Mohammad Azam Khan if the SP regains power in Uttar Pradesh by 2027.
Prasad told that SP will form the next government in 2027, with Akhilesh Yadav stepping in as chief minister. “We’ll withdraw every case against Azam Khan within just 48 hours of taking office,” he said confidently.
He hailed Azam Khan as a “respected figure and one of the party’s most senior leaders.” Prasad accused the ruling BJP government of hitting Azam with fake charges and cooked-up evidence. “The BJP framed him on lies and false stories. He’s already spent nearly two years in jail because of these political attacks, and it will backfire on them big time,” Prasad added.
Rumors have swirled that Azam Khan might jump to another party, but Prasad shut them down fast. “That’s all nonsense. People are even saying the central government could fall soon—total baseless talk. Azam joining anywhere else? Not a chance,” he said.
Azam Khan walked free from Sitapur jail on Tuesday after almost 23 months inside. His release hit a snag when he couldn’t pay Rs 8,000 in fines for two cases right away. His lawyer, Sadnam Singh, stepped in, paid up in court, and got everything verified so Azam could finally leave.
The Allahabad High Court granted him bail on September 18 in the Quality Bar land grab case, filed at Rampur’s Civil Lines police station. Just days earlier, on September 10, the court also approved bail in a case tied to the alleged forced eviction of families from Rampur’s Dungarpur colony.
On top of that, a special MP-MLA court recently cleared Azam in a 17-year-old case involving claims of blocking roads and damaging public property during a protest.
Over the years, police have filed at least 16 FIRs against Azam Khan, covering everything from land disputes to other criminal allegations. As Uttar Pradesh politics heats up ahead of the 2027 elections, this saga highlights the ongoing clashes between SP and BJP in the state.
