Telangana BJP chief N Ramchander Rao fired sharp criticism at the Revanth Reddy government on Tuesday, claiming it’s failing to protect the state’s interests over plans to raise the Almatti Dam height. Speaking at a press conference in Hyderabad, Rao warned that Karnataka’s push to increase the dam from 519 meters to 524 meters could spell disaster for Telangana farmers relying on Krishna River water.

Rao pointed out that Chief Minister Revanth Reddy frequently heads to Delhi to meet Congress leaders like Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Rahul Gandhi. Yet, he hasn’t raised the Almatti Dam issue with them, even though the Congress party runs both Telangana and Karnataka governments. “It’s frustrating,” Rao said, adding that this silence risks harming Telangana’s water share.

Despite a Supreme Court order blocking any construction or height increase at the Almatti Dam, Rao alleged Karnataka is quietly acquiring land around the site to boost its storage capacity. He stressed that going ahead with the plan would devastate agriculture in southern Telangana, including districts like Mahaboobnagar, Nalgonda, and Ranga Reddy. “These areas could turn into deserts without enough Krishna River water,” he cautioned, noting that Mahaboobnagar—Revanth Reddy’s home district—would suffer the most from water shortages.

The Telangana BJP leader vowed his party would fight tooth and nail against any Almatti Dam height increase. He questioned why the chief minister isn’t stepping up to safeguard Telangana’s Krishna River water rights and shield farmers from this threat, especially since Congress holds power in Karnataka too.

Rao didn’t hold back on broader gripes with the Revanth Reddy administration, accusing it of prioritizing “contracts and commissions” over vital issues like securing the state’s water future. He took a jab at the previous BRS government under KCR, saying they locked in just 299 TMC of Krishna water for Telangana—a move he called a raw deal that weakens the state’s position. “Neither the BRS nor the current Congress team has the moral ground to complain,” Rao added with sarcasm, calling Revanth Reddy’s setup a “government for contractors, by contractors, and for commissions.”

In a call to action, Rao urged the Telangana government to jump into talks with Karnataka right away to stop any damage to local farmers and ensure fair Krishna River water sharing.
