Amritsar youth rescued from Iran after days of torture; Tarun Chugh credits PM Modi, EAM Jaishankar

Amritsar, India – A young man from Punjab’s Amritsar, Gurpreet Singh, has returned home after a harrowing two‑week ordeal in Iran that exposed him to human traffickers. The Indian government’s swift action, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, helped rescue Gurpreet and reunite him with his family.

The case drew intense local attention when videos of Gurpreet’s struggle appeared on social media. “The family was in constant anxiety for two weeks after we saw those posts,” said BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh. “Thanks to the government’s timely intervention, he is safe and back with his loved ones.”

Gurpreet, 23, originally sought to travel to the UK with a student and tourist visa. After repeated visa rejections, he turned to an agent who promised a “legal” route. “In Iran, they locked me in a hotel room and demanded money,” he told . He added that other victims, including a man from Rajasthan, were taken with him. Gurpreet described physical abuse, threats, and demands of ₹50 lakh from his family. “I feel like I might never return alive,” he said.

He urges Indian students to avoid illegal smuggling routes and to follow official visa procedures. “I won’t repeat this mistake. Follow the legal process,” he added.

BJP leader Chugh warned that unscrupulous agents lure young people with false promises of easy foreign settlement. “No shortcut can bring prosperity – it only brings suffering and danger,” he cautioned.

Gurpreet’s father, Balkar Singh, expressed gratitude to the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian High Commission for their support. “My son was stuck in Iran for 14 days. The government helped us every step of the way, and now he is safely home,” he said.

The incident highlights ongoing risks for Indian youth abroad and the importance of official travel channels. The Indian government reaffirms its commitment to protecting citizens overseas.
