Andhra Pradesh: YSRCP postpones rallies in view of cyclone

Amaravati—The YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) has moved its statewide protest rallies from October 28 to November 4 because of Cyclone Montha sweeping the Bay of Bengal. The party said the change was to keep people safe as the storm threatens coastal Andhra Pradesh.

Former Chief Minister and YSRCP President Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy urged residents in cyclone‑hit areas to stay alert and follow safety guidelines. He called on party leaders, volunteers and local supporters to help communities with precautions, relief supplies and rehabilitation work.

Meanwhile, senior YSRCP leader Kakani Govardhan Reddy slammed the current government headed by N.K. Chandrababu Naidu for neglecting farmers amid the storms. He said the ruling party has ignored warnings and failed to protect the livelihoods of farmers in Nellore, Kurnool and Ongole districts.

Reddy highlighted that after a recent paddy transplant, farmers faced a severe shortage of urea. The government did not set up procurement centres, leaving farmers scrambling while their crops were washed away by heavy rains. “Nellore alone lost more than 200,000 acres, and another 100,000+ acres in Kurnool, Ongole and nearby districts are still flooded,” he said.

He added that mango, cotton and maize growers have taken heavy hits. Maize farmers lost about ₹12,000 per acre, while paddy farmers in the Krishna and Godavari deltas face serious threats from the cyclone. Despite widespread damage, Govardhan Reddy pointed out that the government has yet to announce any compensation or relief.

“Chandrababu Naidu shows no concern for farmers or agriculture,” he said, accusing the administration of dismantling farmer‑friendly programs like Rythu Bharosa Kendras (RBKs), ignoring input subsidies and turning the Agriculture Department into a playground for brokers and middlemen. He also criticized the chief minister for never holding an agriculture review meeting since taking office.

The YSRCP’s postponed rallies aim to raise public awareness about healthcare privatization and the government’s mishandling of farmers’ needs as Cyclone Montha threatens the state’s coastal communities.
