Jammu’s rail link to Srinagar could open before the year ends, says officials from Indian Railways. The new direct train will connect Jammu and Srinagar, a key step for Kashmir’s connectivity with the rest of India.
Northern Railway is pushing the Jammu‑division work to finish at the latest by November 30. “We’re accelerating the project after last year’s floods set us back,” an official said. The main focus is the stretch between Jammu and Katra, where bridges, tracks, and station upgrades are underway.
At Jammu station, track work is nearly done while civil improvements—new platforms and other facilities—are almost finished. Once the renovation and route upgrades close, authorities will decide when the Jammu‑Srinagar service starts.
This line is part of the bigger Udhampur‑Srinagar‑Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), a challenging Himalayan project that includes the world’s highest railway bridge over the Chenab River and India’s first cable‑stayed railway bridge on the Anji Khad. The USBRL now runs all‑weather, boosting economic growth in the region.
The dream of a train to Kashmir materialised last year when Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the first Vande Bharat service from Katra to Srinagar. With the new Jammu‑Srinagar direct service in sight, travelers will soon enjoy a faster, more convenient route across the valleys.
