India’s fight against drugs takes center stage as the second Anti-Narcotics Task Forces (ANTF) conference kicks off today in New Delhi. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will inaugurate the two-day event on September 16 and 17, bringing together top cops and officials from across the country to tackle narcotics trafficking and substance abuse head-on.
The conference spotlights eight key agendas, including speeding up deportations and extraditions of drug fugitives, ramping up financial probes into illicit activities, and enforcing the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PITNDPS) Act with zero tolerance. Organizers also plan deep dives into topics like Drug Free India @ 2047—the role of ANTF and NCORD in making it happen—dismantling drug cartels and networks, demand reduction strategies, better investigations and trials, and cracking down on precursors, synthetic drugs, and clan labs.
Senior police officers and enforcement agencies from all 36 states and Union Territories will join forces to boost interstate coordination, share vital intelligence, and strengthen local efforts against the drug menace. Heads of ANTFs and reps from other government departments will attend, making this a powerhouse gathering for real action.
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), the event aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a drug-free India. Hosted by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), it carries the theme “United Resolve, Shared Responsibility.” Expect a thorough review of past efforts to combat drugs, plus talks on future roadmaps covering supply reduction, demand curbs, harm minimization, and national security angles.
Sessions will stress a “whole-of-government” approach, blending technology, smart intelligence, and community involvement to build a stronger anti-drug network. The goal? Actionable plans that unite NCB, states, and UTs in a tech-savvy partnership to wipe out drug abuse and trafficking for good.
This builds on steps Amit Shah took in 2021, when he urged all states and UTs to set up dedicated ANTFs. He even launched the first national ANTF heads’ conference in April 2023, showing India’s ongoing commitment to this battle.
