Army and Assam Rifles hold integrated exercise at India’s easternmost point in Arunachal

Itanagar – The Indian Army’s Spear Corps commander, Lt. Gen. Abhijit S. Pendharkar, visited the far‑east of India on November 6 to watch a joint Army‑Assam Rifles exercise in Vijaynagar, Arunachal Pradesh. The drill, called “Integrated Exercise,” tested readiness and combat skills in the region’s rugged terrain.

Defence spokesperson Lt. Col. Mahendra Rawat said the exercise focused on securing the frontline and inserting special‑forces troops by air, including helicopter‑borne moves. The aim was to prove the forces can handle unexpected situations in Arunachal’s remote landscapes.

During his briefing, Lt. Gen. Pendharkar learned about the latest security updates, new technology, and plans to boost combat effectiveness. He also met with local Gorkha ex‑servicemen and Lishu community members in Vijaynagar. He praised their long‑standing service and highlighted how their presence helps keep the region stable.

Vijaynagar sits at India’s easternmost inhabited spot, close to Myanmar on three sides. The town’s strategic importance grew after early‑1960s migrations and settlements that solidified India’s border there.

Earlier this week, the commander inspected forward areas in Arunachal and reviewed “Operation Chaukas,” a series of manoeuvres aimed at keeping troops sharp. He also toured preparations for the upcoming tri‑service drill “Exercise Poorvi Prachand Prahār” in the Eastern Himalayas. He lauded the soldiers’ grit and professionalism under harsh weather, noting their dedication exemplifies the Indian soldier’s spirit.

Lt. Gen. Pendharkar stressed that interoperable training and joint exercises are key to staying ready. His visit reinforced the Spear Corps’ commitment to safeguarding India’s eastern borders.

The Indian Army, Navy and Air Force will later converge in Mechuka, Arunachal Pradesh for “Exercise Poorvi Prachand Prahār.” Designed as a forward‑looking test, the drill will validate land‑air‑maritime integration, improve situational awareness, and confirm command and control structures. Key moments will showcase special forces, drones, precision weapons and networked operations working together in high‑altitude conditions.

These activities underline India’s focus on modern, multi‑domain defence readiness and help keep the Northeast secure against any future conflicts.
