Mumbai, Oct 8 – A. Manimekhalai, the former Managing Director and CEO of Union Bank of India, has been named one of India’s most inspiring women leaders on the 2025 Candere‑Hurun India Women Leaders List.
The list spotlights the country’s most visionary and impactful women who are reshaping industries, driving growth and inspiring the next generation of change‑makers.
Manimekhalai’s inclusion follows a prestigious honor from President Droupadi Murmu, who applauded her work in the Indian banking sector. “When a woman is empowered, a family is empowered, and through that a nation is strengthened,” she said. “This recognition belongs to every woman who dares to dream, every colleague who believes in teamwork, and every young professional who chooses integrity over shortcuts.”
During her time at Union Bank, Manimekhalai led a dramatic transformation. She boosted the bank’s net profit by 243 %, taking it from ₹5,232 crore to almost ₹18,000 crore in just a few years. She also tightened the capital base, improved asset quality and pushed digital innovation that put Union Bank among the country’s most forward‑looking public‑sector institutions.
Her leadership style has always focused on inclusive growth. Manimekhalai championed women‑led initiatives, expanded credit access for small entrepreneurs and pushed financial inclusion into rural and semi‑urban India. By combining technology‑driven systems with a people‑first approach, she modernised processes while keeping the trust and integrity that public‑sector banking demands.
