Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw checked out the upgraded New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday, touting a new holding area and improved ticket counters that will help the city handle the massive crowds that visit during festivals. The minister said the holding space will welcome passengers who haven’t booked a ticket yet, creating a smoother flow during the annual rush. He also warned that cyber‑security must guard automated booking systems against bulk ticket purchases.
During the same visit, Vaishnaw announced that the rail network will run a record‑breaking 12,000 special trains for Chhath, Diwali and other major festivals. New tracks 34,000 km long are already in place, and the Railways expects around 10,700 of those trains to operate nationwide. “We’ll test the systems during the festivals and roll out any improvements at other stations,” he said.
In other news, the Samajwadi Party (SP) sparked a debate when President Akhilesh Yadav’s Facebook account was suspended. The SP’s national secretary, Rajeev Rai, wrote on X that the move was “an attack on democracy” and a blow to India’s political system. The party said the ban was government interference, but Minister Vaishnaw clarified that Facebook acted independently under its policies and that the government had no role.
Facebook’s post‑suspension statement mentioned that an abusive report led to the temporary removal of the SP chief’s account. After internal review, Facebook restored the account and emphasized that its handling remains separate from any political pressure.
