Assam CM announces law to ban polygamy, expands women empowerment initiatives

In Guwahati, Assam’s chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a bold new law that will ban polygamy in the state. The bill is set for discussion at the Assam Assembly on November 25, and the CM said it will protect women from social injustice and help build a fairer society.

The speech took place at a large public meeting in Raha, Nagaon district. While speaking, CM Sarma handed out ₹10,000 checks to 37,833 women who are part of the Mukhya Mantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA). The scheme, which boosts women’s entrepreneurship, has already helped almost 37,000 rural and 1,100 urban women start small businesses.

He highlighted that nearly 800,000 Assamese women are now “lakhpatis”—earning more than ₹1 lakh a year from weaving, livestock, handicrafts and other activities. “Women are the backbone of a self‑reliant Assam,” he said, pointing to local role models from Raha.

The MMUA gives each woman ₹10,000 in seed money, which can grow to ₹25,000 or ₹50,000 depending on performance. CM Sarma also announced that 4,000 new families in Raha will join the Orunodoi Scheme, which gives women monthly financial help for household expenses—a program he praised as a “symbol of dignity and respect.”

After the meeting, the CM opened a new 84.6‑crore railway overbridge that links Raha to Chaparmukh Junction in West Karbi Anglong, improving transport for residents.

By banning polygamy and launching these women‑focused schemes, the Assam government aims to strengthen women’s rights, safety, and economic power—key priorities for the state’s future.
