Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma shared a heartfelt tribute to the late Zubeen Garg, the beloved singer and cultural icon of Assam, saying his spirit will forever live in the hearts of the state’s people. In a touching post on X, formerly Twitter, Sarma explained why fans adored Zubeen so much, calling him a rebel with a generous soul whose music captured Assam’s diverse emotions.

“Over the past few days, many from outside Assam have asked—why are we crazy for #BelovedZubeen? There is no single answer,” Sarma wrote. He pointed out three key reasons: Zubeen’s songs connected deeply with listeners’ feelings and embraced the richness of Assamese culture; his bold, unapologetic opinions made him a legendary figure; and his kindness shone through as one of the most helpful people around. “Zubeen will live forever,” Sarma added.

Zubeen Garg’s funeral took place on Tuesday at Kamarkuchi, just outside Guwahati, with full state honors. Thousands of fans and admirers turned out, many in tears, to say goodbye to the artist known as Goldie to his close ones. His sister, Palme Borthakur, performed the final rites, while his wife, Garima Saikia, broke down in sorrow. A gun salute honored the 52-year-old star as part of the ceremony.

Sarma himself attended the cremation, paying floral tributes and overseeing the rituals alongside family and authorities. In another social media post, he reflected, “The last time that I got to see #BelovedZubeen. From now on, he will live in Assam’s soul, mind, and heart.” Union Minister Kiren Rijiju also visited the site to offer his respects.

Before the funeral, Zubeen’s body lay at the Bhogeswar Baruah Sports Complex in Guwahati, where fans lined up to pay their tributes. The Assam government declared three days of state mourning following his death, canceling all official entertainment, ceremonies, and public events.

Zubeen, a true icon of Assam music, passed away on Friday in Singapore after a tragic drowning incident. He was there for the Northeast India Festival. His body arrived in Guwahati on Sunday via a commercial flight from Delhi, sending shockwaves through the nation. Tributes flooded social media from fans and leaders alike.

Throughout his three-decade career, Zubeen Garg shone as a singer, composer, music director, actor, and filmmaker. He lent his voice to thousands of songs in Assamese, Hindi, Bengali, and other Indian languages. As a skilled multi-instrumentalist, he mastered 12 instruments, from guitar and drums to tabla and harmonium, making him a household name across India.
