Guwahati, Dec 3 (LatestNewsX) – Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma told the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Wednesday that he had sought the centre’s immediate help in the crisis now unfolding at Tezpur University. The university has been hit by a multi‑day protest that has halted normal academic activities, with students alleging serious misconduct by the vice‑chancellor and demanding a swift response.
In a tweet on X, Sarma reported that he had briefed Dharmendra Pradhan on the “present situation” and urged him to appoint a Pro‑Vice Chancellor without delay. “I urged the Hon’ble Minister to appoint a Pro‑Vice Chancellor immediately, pending an impartial enquiry into the conduct of the present Vice‑Chancellor, so that academic stability is maintained,” he said, expressing confidence that the issue would be resolved soon with the minister’s backing.
The unrest began a few months ago when a faction of students accused Vice‑Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh of autocratic decision‑making, unfairly targeting faculty and peers. Tensions grew when the administration allegedly ignored repeated requests for dialogue, leading students to stage sit‑ins, boycott classes and march through the campus demanding the vice‑chancellor’s removal, an interim head, and an independent inquiry.
Numerous student groups highlighted that a vacuum in key administrative posts has worsened the situation, causing delays in exams, academic approvals and hostel management. The Teachers’ Association and the Non‑Teaching Staff Union also called for a transparent investigation to restore confidence and protect the institution’s reputation.
With the turmoil reaching a critical point, Sarma’s intervention signals a significant political acknowledgement of the escalating crisis. The call for a Pro‑Vice Chancellor is viewed as a move to ease day‑to‑day disruptions while the central government looks into the charges against the vice‑chancellor.
None of the classes are running normally, and student leaders have warned that they will keep their non‑violent protests going until the Ministry of Education announces decisive steps. As one of the leading central universities in the Northeast, Tezpur University’s enduring administrative turmoil has alarmed parents, research scholars and academic observers concerned about the impact on current semesters and the upcoming admission cycle.
